Mission Statement

The mission of the Oregon Astrological Association is to promote investigation into astrology, which we define as "the correlation between celestial movements with events and conditions on Earth." We strive to achieve our mission by:

1. Promoting public lectures, forums, and classes.
   
   
2. Providing information to the media which would encourage the fair and accurate representation of astrology.
   
   
3. Encouraging dialogue among our members and with the public, regarding ethical application of astrological information, so as to protect both the public and the reputation of astrology.
   
   
4. Serving as a unifying force for those interested in the study of astrology, and thereby fostering communication and fellowship.
   
   
5. Helping to coordinate scientific research into planetary influences and correlations.
   
   
6. Our interest in astrology is not simply for the sake of astrology, but for the betterment of humankind and the well-being of the planet.

HISTORY
The OREGON ASTROLOGICAL ASSOCIATION, a nonprofit organization, was initially planned at a breakfast meeting in Portland on November 20, 1982 at 07:55am. The organization itself elected its first board of directors and set the first agenda for 1983-84 on July 29, 1983, at 8:30 PM in Portland, Oregon. (To see the OAA charts, click here.) The official incorporation papers were submitted to the State of Oregon on August 1, 1983.

ABOUT THE CITY OF PORTLAND and THE STATE OF OREGON
There are conflicting data regarding the founding of Portland. The following is a list of the commonly used chart data for the city.
November 10, 1843, 12:23pm LMT, Portland OR. (Marc Penfield gives 12:33pm PST, which is 10 minutes later than LMT. The international time zones had not yet been created, however, Lovejoy and Overton would have had time pieces set to Local Mean Time.) This is the date Mr. Lovejoy in his journal recounts stopping with Overton at the Clearing on the Willamette and discussing the possibility of starting a town there.
November 10, 1844, 11:55am LMT, Portland OR. This is the data given by Mrs. Asa Lovejoy in an interview with the Oregonian newspaper in 1899. She maintained it could not have been in 1843, because Overton was not yet in the area then.
June 28, 1845, 12:53pm LMT, Oregon City OR. This is the speculative time for the Sunday dinner at which Lovejoy and Pettygrove tossed the coin that named the new city Portland. It is based on Mrs. Lovejoy's recollection of the event.
January 14, 1851, 11:57am LMT, Salem OR. The Oregon Territorial Legislature passed House Bill #29 approving Portland's petition for incorporation as a city.
February 8, 1851, 09:26am LMT, Salem OR. The territorial governor signed House Bill #29 creating the City of Portland.
