Laurence Jones - The ‘Net underneath the influence (of Neptune in Pisces)

We've all been blindsided by the onslaught and saturation of words, images, and ideas since Neptune entered Pisces. Fewer boundaries, more emotions and more universal expression in the digital landscape of experience leaves plenty of us floating with few if any boundaries between what is real and what isn't. This lecture will trace trends and experiences from Black Lives Matter to #MeToo under the influence of Neptune in Pisces.

10 am - Noon (doors open at 10, lecture begins at 10:15 am)
Location: 4312 SE Stark St, Portland 97215 (Friend's Meeting House)
$10 OAA members / $15 non-members

Laurence's Bio:
His Grandmother married a Gemini (his grandfather) and birth'd a Gemini (his Mother). As his due date approached in the Spring of 1982, his grandmother demanded either to push him out (and have a Taurus) or hold him in (and have a Cancer). The last thing she wanted was another Gemini in her life.

She did the best she could to raise a *Good* Gemini, reading him Linda Goodman's Sun Signs sending him off to nap time. The lifelong fascination with the stars has been deeper than just Science Fiction. 12 years ago, a romantic partner of his gifted him The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need. He finds himself in a community of interpretative artists that use centuries of observation to interpret our pasts, our current moments and what those lessons provide in terms of perspective towards the future.

Sabrina Monarch - Evolutionary Astrology: The Astrology of the Soul Workshop

In this lecture and workshop, we'll learn the fundamentals of Evolutionary Astrology: a Pluto and lunar node focused astrology that affords us a lens into understanding the Soul. During the lecture, we'll explore karma, reincarnation, and depth transformation as it pertains to Evolutionary Astrology. We will explore chart analysis techniques that help us understand the Soul's karmic history and the Soul's current destiny (which is, however, in participation with our free will!). During the workshop, we will work with example charts using the Evolutionary Astrology chart interpretation methods. Attendees may volunteer their charts. Beyond offering a new way to perceive the natal chart, Evolutionary Astrology is truly a wisdom school that helps us understand the karmic roots to personality and life events alike. When we learn how to transform ourselves from our roots, we attain more agency in life, gain the wisdom to transform our most embedded patterns, and we step more fully into our self-actualization.

Location: 4312 SE Stark St, Portland 97215 (Friend's Meeting House)

Jenn Zahrt: Zones of Intensity - Zodiacal Releasing 101 Workshop

In this lecture and workshop, you will learn how to understand and apply an ancient Hellenistic timing technique that has gained new popularity: zodiacal releasing. This technique presents a new way of understanding the warp and weft of you and your clients’ lives. Zodiacal releasing,  in part, helps to identify the intense periods where you tune in to your personal spark and have access to the resources to make what you’ll eventually be known for.

By the end of the day, you will walk away with a new perspective on the flow of events in your life not shown by any other technique, and be able to help your clients frame their lives in a unique way. This experience is designed for the intermediate astrologer, but beginners will also be able to take away a very powerful tool to put in their astrological toolbox. Come unlock the zones of intensity!

Tony Howard: Mercury, Venus and Mars Out of Bounds Explored

In this workshop we'll expand on the morning lecture, delving much deeper into the many ways out of bounds planets can express in the birth chart. When an inner planet is out of bounds, it can express in a multitude of ways that we can only get a real sense of by looking at several charts. We'll look at many of these qualities of expression in detail, with a focus on the high and the low potentials inherent in each. You'll discover why Venus out of bounds folks can have a hard time setting limits, see examples of Mars out of bounds folks "going rogue," and why Mercury out of bounds people can so easily give preference to their head over their heart.

The afternoon will be filled with chart examples and stories. Bring your own charts. We'll have plenty of time to find out if you have an out of bounds planet, and share your own out of bounds stories if you'd like.

Tony Howard: Intro to Out of Bounds Inner Planets

In this lecture, you'll discover a powerful and easy way to incorporate declination into your chart analysis as we explore the always engaging topic of out of bounds planets. We'll focus here on the inner planets - Mercury, Venus and Mars, with a series of dynamic chart examples that will show you just how dramatically the out of bounds signature can modify the behavior of a planet. Out of bounds planets operate beyond the Sun’s jurisdiction, thus coloring their behavior. Metaphors like "outside the box" and "coloring outside the lines" work well to begin to understand this planetary signature, but that's just scratching the surface. Out of bounds stories are dramatic and engaging, so come on out and enjoy a fun lecture about a subject that promises to get you excited about this overlooked technique.

Gray Crawford: Opening to the Other - Relationships in Progression

Saturday Workshop:

The secondary progressed chart is a powerful astrology technique that penetrates into the evolving quality of the natal chart across time. We know that as time passes so do our desires for relationship transform. This workshop will explore how changes in our secondary progressed chart reveal insight into how we are opening to the relationships of our life in new ways.  This workshop will both instruct as well as give space for participants to actively gain deeper understanding into how planets shifting signs and houses through progressions reflect the changes we experience in all of our diverse relationships.  We will also explore how the changes in the interpersonal dynamics within long-term relationships can be seen in the interplay between the changes in the progressed charts of each partner.

Please bring a copy of your natal chart and your current secondary progressed chart to the workshop.

Gray Crawford: Our Astrological Narratives in Relationship

Understanding relationship dynamics is one of the primary reasons people delve deeper into astrology. Whether we desire to heal our own relationships or want to help clients gain insight into their relationships, a fundamental skill is discerning the relational narratives found in the natal chart. Once we become aware of the relationship story found in our birth chart, we arrive at a deeper understanding for why patterns continue to resurface in relationships and why certain types of partners appear in our lives. In this talk Gray Crawford will share methods for how to distill the diverse elements of astrology charts into a coherent relationship story that reveals why we have been engaging in the types of relationships we have been, as well as how our astrological narrative continues to evolve as our relationships change. This talk will also reflect upon how to effectively use synastry and composite techniques in astrology.

Beyond 2017: Annual Astro Faire

Our theme this year is Beyond 2017, an astrological look to the future. Join us for lectures from local professional astrologers, a panel discussion, a raffle, a marketplace of vendors selling astro wares, and more! See below for a full list of speaker topics and times.

Location: 4312 SE Stark St, Portland 97215 (Friend's Meeting House)
$5 at the door

12 - 12:45  The Moon’s Nodes and a Total Solar Eclipse Stimulate Changes with Mark Dodich

After 1½ years of spiritual destiny nodes passing through hard-working Virgo and sleepy Pisces, aren’t you ready for an enthusiastic change of pace? Join us to learn how to take advantage of the nodes moving into heart opening Leo and friendly Aquarius this spring. Add to that a rare total solar eclipse in fun-loving Leo coming in August, and you have a formula for coming out of the humble background to live life on a full and creative level. All are welcome. You don’t need to be an astrologer to gain insight into the next 1½ years of your life.

1 - 1:45  The Prodigal Spirit and Creative Vitality of Jupiter and Uranus with Gray Crawford

The full phase opposition between Jupiter and Uranus we experience throughout 2017 has consistently brought liberating breakthroughs amid the death of old forms in world history.  The shattering and dissolution of old paradigms is especially resonant this year, as the Jupiter and Uranus opposition is occurring within waning cycles of release between Jupiter and Saturn with Neptune and Pluto.  We will explore historical and current correlations with the Jupiter and Uranus cycle, including their current placements in Libra and Aries as well as the eventual shift of Jupiter into Scorpio and Uranus into Taurus in the year ahead.

2 - 2:45  Mega-Manifestation of Zeitgeist with Andrea Gehrz

How do the upcoming year's transits affect us, and how can we optimize for our potentials, while remediating potentially difficult transits? In this lecture, we'll discuss survival techniques as well as the most beneficial ways to capitalize on opportune transits.

3 - 3:45  Panel Discussion moderated by Melanie Gurley

Group discussion with the day's speakers about how their transits and the astrological themes beyond 2017 impact one another and us as individuals.

Eric Meyers: The Astrological Biorhythm: Personal Explorations

Saturday Workshop:

Building from the material presented at the lecture on Friday 4/21, the application to participants' charts will be the focus of the Saturday workshop. We'll be examining both the progressed Moon's cyclical rhythm, as well as parallels and contraparallels, for each participant. Knowing your current season provides insightful and helpful information to navigate the inevitable ups and downs. In this workshop, we'll clarify the current seasonal position, as well as reviewing the peaks and valleys of yesteryear. We'll arrive at a remarkable spiritual perspective to the unfolding of life, which empowers us to live in accordance with nature. Parallels and contraparallels are not obvious in our usual view of charts. This workshop will also bring clarity to this dimension to see more ways in which the planets are in dialogue.

Eric Meyers: The Astrological Biorhythm - The Progressed Moon by Declination

In addition to the familiar cyclical motion around the chart, we move through another dimension. Declination reveals the vertical dimension of height and depth. In this lecture, we'll review the motion through the seasons: Cancer (summer) is at the northernmost declination, and Capricorn (winter) is at the southernmost. In particular, we'll follow the Progressed Moon as it rises and falls in a 28 year cycle, spending 7 years in each "season." The dimension of declination provides indispensable insight to our evolution as we all go through the peaks and valleys of life.

Wade Caves: Navigating Celestial Waters with Electional Astrology

Saturday Workshop:

Elections form the branch of astrology that focuses on selecting ideal times for the big decisions in our lives - when to open that bookstore, when to sign the lease on that new car, even when to cut your hair to increase or decrease growth - to avoid unnecessary troubles. In this talk we will explore the guiding principles of electional astrology, complete with example charts and practical exercises. The techniques are simple and straightforward once understood and will better equip any practicing astrologer in their future elections. In a group discussion, we will also consider how elections fold into other branches of astrology. This presentation is suitable and warmly encouraged for astrologers at all levels.

Wade Caves: The Aries Ingress - Prophecies of the Mundane Astrologer

Friday Night Lecture:

Mundane astrology - or, the astrology of the world - was anciently held to be astrology's pinnacle and most noble application. Employing techniques like the assessment of Saturn/Jupiter conjunctions, comets and eclipses, and Aries ingresses, this branch is quite distinct and unique. This talk explores the historical approach to annual Aries ingresses and the techniques astrologers applied to these charts to forecast the future for their respective king and country. In addition to historical charts, we will also take a look at the Aries ingress for 2017, set for Washington, D.C., and assess key take-aways that better inform us on the astrological year ahead.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Lecture ends around 9:30 p.m.
Location: 4312 SE Stark St, Portland 97215 (Friend's Meeting House)

Deborah Norton-Kertson: The Uranus/Eris Conjunction in Aries

Friday Night Lecture:

Most would agree that 2016 is a year for the record books. The amount of fear, anxiety, and intensity currently being experienced in the collective is unprecedented in recent history. This year we have entered into a Uranus/Eris conjunction in Aries, an astrological cycle that occurs only every 500 years. So just what energies are in play here? In this lecture we will discuss the energetic vibrations of revolutionary Uranus and chaotic Eris. Just what can we expect from them as they continue to dance in Aries, the sign of the warrior, culminating in their next conjunction in March of 2017? We will look at their past conjunctions to give us insights into what surprises are yet to come.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Lecture ends around 9:30 p.m.
Location: 4312 SE Stark St, Portland 97215 (Friend's Meeting House)

Gary Lorentzen: A Life in Progress - The Secondary Progressed Lunation Cycle

Friday Lecture:

We are all born in a particular Sun/Moon phase with a specific angle or aspect between them. The prenatal New Moon tells us our genetic and/or karmic point of departure for our lives. But we are all a ‘work in progress.’ The Sun/Moon phase, aspect, sign and house positions tell us how, why, where and with what challenges we need to move through life. The Secondary Progressed Sun/Moon relationship shows us our personal progress and development as we mature and experience ourselves in the world.

In this lecture, Gary will outline the meaning of the progressed lunation cycle in its phases and aspects, and provide chart examples for the significance of the Secondary Progressed New Moon to Full Moon and back to New Moon in people’s lives.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Lecture ends around 9:30 p.m.
Location: 4312 SE Stark St, Portland 97215 (Friend's Meeting House)
$10 OAA members / $15 non-members

Gary's Bio:

Gary Lorentzen has been a practicing astrologer since 1972. He taught Astrology at the old Beltane Books and Metaphysical Center and the Astrology Center of the Northwest in Seattle in the 1970s and 1980s. He has been the president of both the Washington State and the Oregon Astrological Associations. He was on the Board of Directors for Kepler College for twelve years responsible for the development of the curriculum and instructional designs and negotiating with the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board for approval of Kepler’s B.A. in Astrological Studies. In 1995 Gary was selected to lecture on astrological education at the World Congress of Astrological Associations in Lucerne, Switzerland. In the last twenty-five years, Gary has focused mostly on Mundane and Astro-History, and has published numerous articles and an on-line book, “The Time of the Fishes: An Astrological Critique of the Piscean Age.” He has degrees in Buddhist Studies, History, German and a graduate degree in Medieval Germanic Linguistics.
